I am a Naturopathic Doctor and clinical research scientist at the University of Washington, where I have been studying neuroinflammatory and neurodegenerative disease since 2004. Prior to medical school at Bastyr University, I was a midwife for ten years and mothered five vibrant children. I then received my undergraduate degree in Horticulture, with a specialty in the study of phytochemicals (medicinal plants).
From this background, I have a keen interest in patients, the biochemical causation of “dis-ease” and the natural pharmacy that can aid their recovery. Part of what I incorporate into my practice is story-telling as medicine. The patient’s body is a symbol of the mythology of their life. Each one has a story to tell both with physical symptoms and personal narrative. Appointments will focus on close listening to hear the underlying themes in the patient’s life. In this sense, the imperative of “treating the whole person” starts on a basic level of assisting the patient in creating a new script for their life story.
On another level, the biochemical basis for depression is of particular interest to me. Despite the fact that there are no medical ‘biomarkers’ for depression, there is evidence that using therapeutic doses of neurochemical precursors can assist patients as an alternative to, or as they wean off of anti-depressant medications and sleep aids. This is a case-based and sensitive intervention that will be closely monitored with other health-care providers. I offer women’s gynecologic wellness exams as well as approaches to PMS, PMDD and the peri-menopause and sexual dysfunction. I very much enjoy the experience of ‘midwifiing’ women through various stages of their lives.
My practice offers focused specialty and complementary care for neurologic diagnoses such as: Multiple Sclerosis, Parkinson Disease, autistic spectrum disorders, neuropathic pain, and Reflex Sympathetic Dystrophy. Primary treatment modalities are individualized in collaboration with primary care providers. Emphasis is on nutritional approaches to biochemical balance/deficit through IV nutrition (Orthomolecular and Functional medicine approaches).
